If you have a tone or volume pot on your guitar that you don't use much, corrosion can build up, and in some cases the pot can fail altogether. The best thing for them is spraying electronic lubricant in the pot but you can avoid a lot of problems by just "exercising" the pot, meaning working it through it's entire range a few times on a regular basis. An easy preventive maintenance!
